April 18th 1944 Mom Dearest

18 April 1944

Mom Dearest,

I'm not trying to write a letter tonight just a note to let you know I'm all right and to ask a favor of you.
Leona's birthday is May 2, and as yet I've been able to find nothing that I can get her. I do want to Surprise her with some flowers through mom. I could wire them I guess but delivery on the right day might not be certain and I know my mom won't let me down.

If I were there & could be with her I'd give her an orchid corsage which she's always wanted but now I think a half dozen or a dozen of those deep red satin roses would be perfect. I don't know what the flower situation in Salt Lake is but will you just use your best judgement and get what you can? I'll enclose a note which I wish you'd put in and envelope and put in with them. Thanks loads mom.

Right here i want to tell you mom how much I love you-only words just can't express the love this soldier feels for his mom. That is something I can only do when I'm there at home to throw my arms around you and kiss you the way the most wonderful mother in the world should be kissed.

I've got some more computiting to do tonite so I'll have to cut this short. I can't say too much about what we're doing here at Camp Butner except that I'm with a survey party testing some gun batteries and having fun doing the work Ive been trained to do for a change.

Good night mom dearest I'll write soon.
Love Lu
P.S. over

P. S. I'll be back at Fort Bragg Sat or Sun. so keep writing me there.
Love Lu

P. P. S. Mom tell me what the flowers cost and I'll send you a money order covering them. They've got to be from me, understand? Thanks mom your a darling.
Lu

July 20 1945 Letter to Mom

Bensheim Germany July 20th 1945 Dearest Mom, I started to get a letter off to you last night about midnight. I was corporal of the guard on duty in the orderly room. But an electrical storm was commencing and I no sooner got paper and pen out than a crash of lightning hit the power relay station nearby and all the lights went out. That storm was a beaut. Great jagged forks of lightning playing everywhere and the thunder sounded like all the artillery in the E.T.O. (European theater of operations) was sounding off in unison. In between flashes it was pitch black but most of the time (for about a half hour) you could read street signs a block away it was so bright. One triple forked bolt lit up the castle up on the hill and really made an eerie scene. You (You) know this is the first place I've seen actual balls of lightning. They looked like balls of fire.  Mail came in at last yesterday. A big batch of it and it was really swell to hear what's going on at hom...

Watch for Lu's binoculars in many of his photos. They might be his best used acquisition from the war.  This mimeographed newsletter is an interesting view into the voyage home.

June 6th Journal Entry-Buchenwald Tour-Air Field-

Not sure where this was taken, but seems to be a fallen 3rd Reich eagle symbol This one captioned 'hand' If you zoom in you can see the scar on the back of his right hand from when he was injured by falling tree limbs when they were near a German plane that was strafing  the area.   June 6th Went on trip to Weimar to see Buchenwald internment camp. Former inmate took us through. Saw Jerry Air Field also. Trip took us through beautiful ski country. Marilu: Wish I'd known this to ask him about it or that he had written more about his impressions and experiences for this day.
