September 22nd Letter to Mom and family-Pass to town

Dearest mom & all,
Got your letter of Sept. 3 a few days ago but have been so darn busy that I haven't had time to touch correspondence. I'd much rather write individual letters to all of you and if this break lasts long enough I will but for now just make believe I'm talking to each and every one of you cause I love you all.

Things were rather hectic for me for quite awhile after we came over here and we still have some work of the drudgery sort to do for a while but we are now in a "Rest" area safe and sound from any enemy action and have prospects of some relaxation (can't count on it too long though.)

Last night I got my first pass in France and we all went into a little town nearby (I'll tell you its name when I'm allowed). Of course the first thing the boys I was with headed for...

...was a wine shop, but that did them no good- "Bosche Take" was all they could get from the proprietress. That was the way with every thing-The Germans got it all. What I wanted most to do was to find something I could send you mom for a birthday present (even delayed, it's the first chance I've had) and something else for each of you just as a memento of France- The town was really barren though, in fact we found only one little shop open at 8:00 just as it was getting dark, all it had was a few post cards, that didn't show much, and a few trinkets. I didn't find much but I'll sent it home and see who wants it later when maybe I can be there. I'll wait till I can try again.

We talked o a lot of French people using Karp (3 years high school french) as interpreter and learned a lot of what went on under German occupation etc. One lady promised to get us some...

...lace caps the women wear here. One of them would really be typical of the style here. Like one, Mom? Hope I can get one. The town gets only two hours of electricity at night and only about 20 min. of that was after dark so by 9:00 we were in pitch blackness and ready to head back to the pup tents.

I'm certainly glad to hear about Jim's position now with the 28th. He's a good man for that kind of work and I know he'll like it better than platoon officer or some such job. I'll get a note off to him soon and see if we can't get some sort of contact before this is over.

I'm mighty anxious to hear all about Polly & her baby-which should be there by now. Keep me informed won't you.
My love to all
Lu

July 20 1945 Letter to Mom

Bensheim Germany July 20th 1945 Dearest Mom, I started to get a letter off to you last night about midnight. I was corporal of the guard on duty in the orderly room. But an electrical storm was commencing and I no sooner got paper and pen out than a crash of lightning hit the power relay station nearby and all the lights went out. That storm was a beaut. Great jagged forks of lightning playing everywhere and the thunder sounded like all the artillery in the E.T.O. (European theater of operations) was sounding off in unison. In between flashes it was pitch black but most of the time (for about a half hour) you could read street signs a block away it was so bright. One triple forked bolt lit up the castle up on the hill and really made an eerie scene. You (You) know this is the first place I've seen actual balls of lightning. They looked like balls of fire.  Mail came in at last yesterday. A big batch of it and it was really swell to hear what's going on at hom...

Watch for Lu's binoculars in many of his photos. They might be his best used acquisition from the war.  This mimeographed newsletter is an interesting view into the voyage home.

June 6th Journal Entry-Buchenwald Tour-Air Field-

Not sure where this was taken, but seems to be a fallen 3rd Reich eagle symbol This one captioned 'hand' If you zoom in you can see the scar on the back of his right hand from when he was injured by falling tree limbs when they were near a German plane that was strafing  the area.   June 6th Went on trip to Weimar to see Buchenwald internment camp. Former inmate took us through. Saw Jerry Air Field also. Trip took us through beautiful ski country. Marilu: Wish I'd known this to ask him about it or that he had written more about his impressions and experiences for this day.
