Cliff Hope from his book: "What a life for civilized men to lead!" exclaimed Phil Grathwol, our battery philosopher, as he contemplated tent life in the rain. That summed it up for most of us. The only access by vehicle to our camp was by a steep, muddy road. Vehicles had to shift into low gear before beginning the ascent. Grathwol called our bivouac area the Gotterdammerung. Those of us riding in the weapons carrier picked up the theme, humming "the ride of valkyries" as loud as we could during the muddy climb up to camp. Survey work began in the area east of St. Vith on the day after our arrival, but the weather kept us from going out much of the time.
