October 21, Saturday-Journal Entry-Survey close to the lines

10/21/1944- Off on D. S. at about 0930 Troisveres Lux- Wiltz- Ettelbruck, Luxembourg,
Rodt/Syrgwecker and finally to Berboug----
We received a royal welcome to the tune of German 88's and 105's which killed two chiefs of section in a nearby gun Btry. and injured six---
They brought out the dead in a W. C. (weapons Carrier).
Billeted in two story home after being chased out of another (town empty of civilians)
P-47 dive bombed and strafed the Germans-
Came in from High Alt-Left vapor trails-
Shook pears out of trees.

Cliff Hope from his book: Our fun and games ended on the following Saturday when our survey party was ordered to the Mompach-Berbourg area of eastern Luxembourg, close to the front. A few minutes after we entered Berbourg, German shells landed a few hundred yards away. Shortly after, medics carried two bodies past us. We heard that six more soldiers were wounded. That night we billeted in a house left by Luxembourgers. There I found a number of Nazi postcards and German and Luxemboug geography books. There were virtually no civilians left in the town but it still had running water and electricity. I found myself wondering who was paying the utility bills.

Nov 26th 1945 To Leona from Wes Hill

Nov 26, 1945 Luzon Dear Leona: Well here I am still but not for long. No kidding a dream. A long worn out Dream is coming nearer to reality. I will be home some time in January. Unless orders change. But up to now we sail or get on a boat on the 10th of December. I'm about going Nuts for that is only 15 Days away. All the 70 bomber have gone to Manila last week & we are the first to go as a Unit. with 60 to 69 pointers exclusive. So you know what that means from now on there is no use in writing for the Post Office readdresses to my home address. so here I am. and not a darn thing to write about. Our old Outfit Broke up and so I'm in the 736th AAA Gun Bn. which is second on the list. for shipment. 43,000 men are going to shipped from the AAA this December on 147 Troop Transports. So I'll see you after I walk out of the Gates of Fort Douglas or should I call you up for Instruction on how to get around Salt Lake. Well that's too far ahead to think clear...

November 13th-14th Arrival in New York

Not sure when most of these photos were taken, but the last looks like arrival. The others are just so the photos are spread out over the On the Ship posts.
