October 4th, Wednesday-Journal Entry-Log Hut and "Looting"


Oct 4-Didn't go out til noon.
Worked on log hut.
Surveyed into St. Vith-
"looted" some burned out homes for small stoves-3-

Cliff Hope from his book: Survey work began in the area east of St. Vith on the day after our arrival, but the weather kept us from going out much of the time . Within a few days we were into our first looting. From burned-out houses, we picked up three stoves and an empty pewter bottle. Thompson got a bed. We placed our finds on the floor of the weapons carrier so the MPs wouldn't see them. Because we were still in Belgium, looting was officially forbidden" "Thou shalt not steal from thine allies."

Dearest mom & all, Got your letter of Sept. 3 a few days ago but have been so darn busy that I haven't had time to touch correspondence.
