Dearest Mom & All,

Yours and Polly's letters of the 28th (Nov) came last night and it was really packed with news. I was going to answer it last night but I wasn't in the right frame of mind. You see, one of the boys who bunks downstairs and I have done a lot of talking about our expected young 'uns since we came over seas. His wife was expecting hers the middle of November. Last night he got word that the baby was born dead. His wife is doing fine though and he is taking it better than I think I would. I'm very humble and thankful for the way the Lord has blessed us all. He certainly has watched over us.

I have another letter from Jim but of course I can see Polly has the latest news from him anyway so I can only add that he seems in excellent spirits and just "champing at the bit" because of that slow healing ankle. That purple heart medal is a very slight recompense to my way of thinking and I won't kick a bit if I go home without one.

The pictures of Polly and Rocky are really sweet. The little tyke does have a strong resemblance to Jim doesn't he! Jim and I have certainly got a strong tie pulling us home.

Not that I want Ray's asthma to get any worse but I'd strictly like to see him get a discharge. Discharge! Hey that's an odd looking word. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever get it applied to me.

Leona has probably told you I received the birthday cable last week (Fast Service- No!) and so far I have received three boxes-one from you, mom, one from Polly and one from Leona. Gee I'm glad to hear grandma Winsor is there with you. You know-I have two of the most wonderful grandmothers in the world and I wish I were where I could put my arms around them and tell them how much I love them. By the way mom, that goes for you and all the rest, there at home. I miss you all so darn much.

That Global Thinkers Inc. organization sounds like a good organization mom-just so it doesn't get to be radical busy body affair like the women's temperance league etc. I'll talk G. I. morals over with you when I come home. Personally I think you have high ambitions but a tough row to hoe.

Our second snow is now trying to make up its' mind whether to stay or melt. It's cold enough that I'm glad I've got a nice warm room to sleep in. All in all this isn't bad.

Oh, say mom-Bill Richards was telling me today that Dr. Harris is the new U. S. A. C. President-What goes?
My love to all
Lu

Journal Entry March 27, 28th And Battalion history

March 27 Crashed B-24 March 28 Put in mike base-taped-Jeep broke tape at road intersection. Put in flash OPs. Picked up Helmet, leather. Battalion History: On 28 March, headquarters of the Barnstorming 16th crossed the Rhine, followed the next day by the Letter Batteries. With advancing armor taking the fight out of the Germans, the 16th found itself scouring the woods around Henmethal --- for prisoners, souvenirs and eggs. Souvenirs and eggs were more plentiful than prisoners. From Ray Hight's book:  By the time the 285th crossed the Rhine toward the end of March, much of the area was in American hands and things were moving so quickly we hardly had time to set up. The German forces were pulling back, and there was very little opposition as we crossed the southern part of Germany almost up to the boundary of Czechoslovakia.

Nov 26th 1945 To Leona from Wes Hill

Nov 26, 1945 Luzon Dear Leona: Well here I am still but not for long. No kidding a dream. A long worn out Dream is coming nearer to reality. I will be home some time in January. Unless orders change. But up to now we sail or get on a boat on the 10th of December. I'm about going Nuts for that is only 15 Days away. All the 70 bomber have gone to Manila last week & we are the first to go as a Unit. with 60 to 69 pointers exclusive. So you know what that means from now on there is no use in writing for the Post Office readdresses to my home address. so here I am. and not a darn thing to write about. Our old Outfit Broke up and so I'm in the 736th AAA Gun Bn. which is second on the list. for shipment. 43,000 men are going to shipped from the AAA this December on 147 Troop Transports. So I'll see you after I walk out of the Gates of Fort Douglas or should I call you up for Instruction on how to get around Salt Lake. Well that's too far ahead to think clear...
