Feb 2- To Weppeler & URB Germany
Cliff Hope- The good news was the return of unflappable Phil Hand, who had been gone since I broke his ankle at Lopscombe Corners. There was no letup in my (complaining) about Sergeant Thompson. I usually referred to him as "the Monster".
Lu From Ray Hight's book: Though we typically were behind the front lines, sometimes when there was a lull in the fighting, we would extend our survey out in front of infantry defense lines. During these times we would come across the infantry troops and meet soldiers who'd been in their foxholes for days without relief. As they saw us coming, they would climb out and ask if we were there to take over. The looks on their faces and their sagging shoulders when we told them "no" was haunting.
