June 27th Journal Entry

June 27th Rest of Battery came down (At H. W. also). Just the Enlisted Men under 85 points. Good to get away from C. S. in 285th. No drill, no cutting grass, no carrying carbines, whole town on limits. Marilu: Not sure who or what C.S. is, but it seems the duties are relaxing and none of the nearby town is off limits to visits from the GIs, where before they were strictly limited to the main street and so on.

June 11th Letter to Mom and All

Meiningen June 17th Dearest Mom & All Leona should have told you what my set up is by now so I won't go into it in any detail. There hasn't been any action taken as yet but the 285th is going to be demobilized and probably in the states.  I still don't have any idea whether I'll be with the outfit when that happens or not. All I can do is wait and hope so, or hope that the unit I might be transferred to is slated to pass through the states on its way to the Pacific. Our mail situation hasn't been defined to us as yet. All I know is that the only mail reaching us is some that has been floating around the continent for a while. It's pretty certain that the 285th mail is being held in New York. Maybe we're going to it instead of it coming to us!  Then again if I get transferred, God only knows when I'll get a letter. This business of being on the discharge borderline is hard on the nerves. My official 71 points would leave me pretty certai

June 7th Journal Entry-Retreat Parade

June 7th HO 2nd F.A. group retreat parade. The  retreat  ceremony serves a twofold purpose. It signals the end of the official duty day and serves as a ceremony for paying respect to the flag. ... If conducted at the base  parade  ground,  retreat  is part of the  parade  ceremony. If conducted within the unit area, it is usually a ceremony not involving a  parade . Marilu: I'm not sure if these photos are relevant to this entry, but I am including them for a visual atmosphere from the time period.

June 6th Journal Entry-Buchenwald Tour-Air Field-

Not sure where this was taken, but seems to be a fallen 3rd Reich eagle symbol This one captioned 'hand' If you zoom in you can see the scar on the back of his right hand from when he was injured by falling tree limbs when they were near a German plane that was strafing  the area.   June 6th Went on trip to Weimar to see Buchenwald internment camp. Former inmate took us through. Saw Jerry Air Field also. Trip took us through beautiful ski country. Marilu: Wish I'd known this to ask him about it or that he had written more about his impressions and experiences for this day. Follow the link for a description of the camp for those who visit now. https://www.tracesofwar.com/sights/403/Concentration-Camp-Buchenwald.htm Buchenwald concentration camp From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to navigation Jump to search "Buchenwald" redirects here.
