July 27th-29th 1944 'Lu Darling'

Leona and Lynn

Thursday, July 27th

Lu Darling,

Hello  Daddy, How do you like the idea now that it's really real! You should have the cable and your Mother's letter by Now.

July 28th
Jeepers sweets, at this rate I may cover a whole week to cover one page, rather disjointed isn't it. I tried sitting up yesterday and it made me kinda sick. So I'm just propped up a little bit now.

Oh honey, our baby is so sweet, she's such a darling, you could just eat her up. She's good too, just never, never cries. I get her about every 4 hours to feed her. -Sounds as though the babies are coming now.

Lynn has been fed and very soon it will be time for my lunch.

Guess I should start from the beginning darling and tell you all about it. Right now it's really hard to remember all I went through. At the time I thought I would perish, but everyone said I was so lucky, my bad pains didn't last too awfully long and the baby came fast. Of course coming fast the way she did the tendons didn't have a chance to stretch so they got ripped, but I only had to have 2 stitches.

Jeepers sweetheart, I wish you could be here too. I miss you so and I know how anxious you are to be with us. Your little girl is the most beautiful baby. I love her so. And darling she's so good, always asleep.

As you can guess, another day has gone by and it's the 29th. My 7th day and I'm just getting so that I can sit up without getting too dizzy and nauseated.

I started chilling last night and then I perspired, got all flushed and everything and pains in my side. They gave me pills and stuff. Now if I can just get rid of the pains I'll feel fine. Beginning to get just a little dizzy, but I'm determined to get this letter off to you sometime today, cause it's a whole week since I mailed one to you. You'd have had one dated last Saturday if Lynn hadn't gotten in such a hurry.

There was a little girl in the next bed and her soldier hubby came up to see her every day. They both looked so excited and in love, I almost want to cry. How I'd have leaped if my Hubby could have come up and grabbed me in his arms.

Don't get too blue sweetheart, please. Remember you've got to keep up our morale. I'll give Lynn plenty of love darling, everyone will cause she's so sweet.

Let's hurry and get the war over with so we can have our little family together.

Just had my bath honey and very very soon they'll bring our Lynn to me for her mid morning meal.

I love you darling more and more all the time.

Always your devoted, loving wife,
Leona

Though the distances were not great, the continued movement required a certain amount of reorganizing each time. By the end of October we were in the Mompach-Berbourg area of eastern Luxemboug, near the front. It was not long before German shells landed not too far away. Our main reminders that the army was just a few kilometers away were the nightly visits by "Bed Check Charlie," buzz bombs that whizzed overhead each night about midnight. The V-1 flying bomb...

Welcome

Welcome to Winsor War Notes, the experiences of Luther Snow Winsor in World War Two. Subscribe to experience the day by day journal entries published on the matching day of the year for the time of his deployment to Europe and the Battle of the Bulge. Entries will include scans of the pages of his handwritten notes made at the time with a transcription and pertinent sections of the history he wrote later using these notes to jog his memories. The idea of this project is to publish and read the entries on the days of the year that they were originally written so we can get a feel for the weather setting and of the passage of time as it passed for him as he had these experiences. I will include relevant photos where possible. I suggest viewing Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan if you want a more graphic sense of what he was experiencing. He said that Saving Private Ryan was very realistic to his memories and Band of Brothers depicts many of the same kinds of things ...

Watch for Lu's binoculars in many of his photos. They might be his best used acquisition from the war.  This mimeographed newsletter is an interesting view into the voyage home.
