July 30th 'Dearest Lu'

Sunday, July 30th

How does it feel to be really a Daddy, darling?  Isn't it wonderful! I'm so happy sweetheart, there is only one thing to make every thing perfect.  And you know what that is.

Little Lynn is such an adorable baby darling that you know I'm going to give her lots and lots of lovin. If it's true that you can spoil children with lots of love, then ours will be the most spoiled child you will ever hope to see.

I get to see the baby so seldom that I can hardly wait to get home where she will really and truly be mine and I can put sweet little white clothes on her. Gee honey, you surely knew your stuff when you sent that sweet little pink jacket. She's going to be blessed in it you know.

The hospital gives out a birth certificate with the baby's feet prints and Mother's thumb print. It isn't a legal document but it's awfully nice to have.

I feel much brighter today. The prospect of going home is getting me so excited. I was awfully woozy while I was trying to write that first letter. But I've been feeling so much better. I get stronger every day (Gee I hope I will fit my clothes)  The doctor says I can hang my feet over the side of the bed tomorrow and I can go home Tuesday.

I thought I would trace the right footprint for you. She weighed 6 lbs. 3 oz when she was born and was 19 inches long and nice and chubby, and she's still a little fatty.

Her eyes are really dark blue and her hair line is like yours honey.

I know it's hard to be a daddy by remote control, but I can feel that your with us every minute sweetheart. Besides your heart honey, I do have a real live bit of you here with me and I'm going to take the best possible care of her. That's a promise darling.

Gee honey, I've missed your letters for the past few days. I hope they start coming soon.

Very soon I will have the loan of my baby for a few minutes. Then I'll get ready for visiting hours. Honestly it's just one thing after another. I've been getting so worn out during the day that I really sleep at nights now.

I love you darling and I love Lynn specially for you too.

Always your loving wife,
Leona

Though the distances were not great, the continued movement required a certain amount of reorganizing each time. By the end of October we were in the Mompach-Berbourg area of eastern Luxemboug, near the front. It was not long before German shells landed not too far away. Our main reminders that the army was just a few kilometers away were the nightly visits by "Bed Check Charlie," buzz bombs that whizzed overhead each night about midnight. The V-1 flying bomb...

Welcome

Welcome to Winsor War Notes, the experiences of Luther Snow Winsor in World War Two. Subscribe to experience the day by day journal entries published on the matching day of the year for the time of his deployment to Europe and the Battle of the Bulge. Entries will include scans of the pages of his handwritten notes made at the time with a transcription and pertinent sections of the history he wrote later using these notes to jog his memories. The idea of this project is to publish and read the entries on the days of the year that they were originally written so we can get a feel for the weather setting and of the passage of time as it passed for him as he had these experiences. I will include relevant photos where possible. I suggest viewing Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan if you want a more graphic sense of what he was experiencing. He said that Saving Private Ryan was very realistic to his memories and Band of Brothers depicts many of the same kinds of things ...

Watch for Lu's binoculars in many of his photos. They might be his best used acquisition from the war.  This mimeographed newsletter is an interesting view into the voyage home.
