Letter to Mom July 3rd 1944

Towards the end of getting mom and dad's house ready for sale I found some additional letters from the time period of WWII starting before the August journal entries. Although I was unable to get them published here on the anniversary of when they were written, I want to get started with these to lead into the time of the Journal.

Mom Dearest,
I hope Leona is giving you all the news about me cause of course I spend most of my writing time on her. Mail delivery from here isn't so hot in any form so don't be worried if there is any lapse in my letters.

I've always heard that England was beautiful but it's even better than I imagined. Mom if you've ever had the urge to do a little landscape painting of neatly laid out farms, with hedged borders, and rustic and old but well kept farm buildings and brick houses- This is the place to do it. Five of us were invited out to a lovely old English home and we really enjoyed the warm friendship and atmosphere of the people. Their collection of old oaken furniture (still serviceable as new, copper and brass work and fine china is something I've never before seen. One table is 250 yrs old and that's average.
I love the cool weather here in spite of the frequent showers and if I can just get some mail saying that you are all well and maybe a cable saying that I'm a proud daddy and that Leona is well-I'll be happy-Love Lu

Nov 26th 1945 To Leona from Wes Hill

Nov 26, 1945 Luzon Dear Leona: Well here I am still but not for long. No kidding a dream. A long worn out Dream is coming nearer to reality. I will be home some time in January. Unless orders change. But up to now we sail or get on a boat on the 10th of December. I'm about going Nuts for that is only 15 Days away. All the 70 bomber have gone to Manila last week & we are the first to go as a Unit. with 60 to 69 pointers exclusive. So you know what that means from now on there is no use in writing for the Post Office readdresses to my home address. so here I am. and not a darn thing to write about. Our old Outfit Broke up and so I'm in the 736th AAA Gun Bn. which is second on the list. for shipment. 43,000 men are going to shipped from the AAA this December on 147 Troop Transports. So I'll see you after I walk out of the Gates of Fort Douglas or should I call you up for Instruction on how to get around Salt Lake. Well that's too far ahead to think clear...

Not sure when most of these photos were taken, but the last looks like arrival. The others are just so the photos are spread out over the On the Ship posts.
