July 13 Friday Letter to Mom and All

July 13th Friday

Dearest Mom and All,

It's been too darn long since I wrote last and there's no excuse. I've been hoping like all get out that each succeeding day would bring some definite news of what the future holds but doggone it, some one just wants to keep that news to themselves. I can find out the approximate sailing dates of a dozen outfits around here, but ours! Not a chance!

The only real information that is going around now is that the VI corps (the corps 2nd FOB is assigned to) is going to be relieved of its duties here in Bensheim by the permanent occupation force some time in the last part of next week. That means we'll probably move. But where to I da-know. Probably into the field and tents like a few other Battalions are doing right now. It may be a move closer home-can't tell.VI Corps is scheduled to leave soon but whether units like ours will go with them or not isn't stated. All that's fairly certain is that we are to be redeployed for the Pacific by way of the U.S. as soon as transportation is available.

You can see what's on my mind 90% of the time can't you...! It isn't conducive to writing good letters home.

Seems so darn far away when you get a pen in hand and the events of life here in Germany seem rather uninteresting to write about when I'm dreaming of home. Then too, mail has been lousy. A few letters from Leona came down from the 285th dated the middle of June and one recent one (July 2) mailed to the 2nd. Got one from Wes but the last one from home I got back at Meiningen. It wss Polly, June 6th. I'm anxious to hear all about Bea's new baby and waiting is a hard job.

Life isn't too hard around here right now. In the mornings we're getting a lot of battle worn equipment back in shape and our afternoons are all devoted to athletics. Most of the hot sunny ones I spend at the big swimming pool in town. It's an outdoor job and plenty nice. I'm getting a pretty good suntan too. There's usually a movie at night and I've gone to a couple of G.I. shows. One in a beautiful theater in Mannheim (20 miles south of here) "Carmine" a slapstick riot of G.I.s in gals clothes doing a  G.I. "Opera". The other was in Frankfurt. (30 miles north of here). Both cities were bombed out but interesting.

I'll try to be better about writing in the future but I certainly hope it won't be long till letters are unnecessary.
Love to all
-Lu-

September 22nd Letter to Mom and family-Pass to town

Dearest mom & all, Got your letter of Sept. 3 a few days ago but have been so darn busy that I haven't had time to touch correspondence. I'd much rather write individual letters to all of you and if this break lasts long enough I will but for now just make believe I'm talking to each and every one of you cause I love you all. Things were rather hectic for me for quite awhile after we came over here and we still have some work of the drudgery sort to do for a while but we are now in a "Rest" area safe and sound from any enemy action and have prospects of some relaxation (can't count on it too long though.) Last night I got my first pass in France and we all went into a little town nearby (I'll tell you its name when I'm allowed). Of course the first thing the boys I was with headed for... ...was a wine shop, but that did them no good- "Bosche Take" was all they could get from the proprietress. That was the way with every th...

July 20 1945 Letter to Mom

Bensheim Germany July 20th 1945 Dearest Mom, I started to get a letter off to you last night about midnight. I was corporal of the guard on duty in the orderly room. But an electrical storm was commencing and I no sooner got paper and pen out than a crash of lightning hit the power relay station nearby and all the lights went out. That storm was a beaut. Great jagged forks of lightning playing everywhere and the thunder sounded like all the artillery in the E.T.O. (European theater of operations) was sounding off in unison. In between flashes it was pitch black but most of the time (for about a half hour) you could read street signs a block away it was so bright. One triple forked bolt lit up the castle up on the hill and really made an eerie scene. You (You) know this is the first place I've seen actual balls of lightning. They looked like balls of fire.  Mail came in at last yesterday. A big batch of it and it was really swell to hear what's going on at hom...

November 4th 1945 Embarkation! Headed Home on the USS Westerly Victory ship

Watch for Lu's binoculars in many of his photos. They might be his best used acquisition from the war.  This mimeographed newsletter is an interesting view into the voyage home.
